A lot of measures have been taken. Planting trees helps improve and beautify the environment. Besides laws concerning environmental protection have been put into effect and achieved good results.
However the problem of environmental protection remains far from being solved. On the one hand the environment pollution and destruction are getting worse and worse in the modern world. On the other hand the lack of knowledge about the importance of protecting environment hinders the solving of the problem. In a word there is a long way to go before we enjoy a clean and comfortable world.

The process is not the road itself but the attitudes and feelings the caution courage and persistance we have as we encounter new experience and unexpected obstacles. Take myself as an example I changed my major when I became a postgraduate. After the choicedays have been harsh for me.I cannot understand the new lessons at all. For they are closely related to mathmatics which I learned nothing about before. However wuth the belief that this is the great chance for me to experience new ideas and challenge myselfI persisted. I asked for help from every channel and reorgonized my life. Gradually I could understand some parts and even found maths interesting.Moreover I learned to act instead of complaining. I hope I can travel around the world someday. I want to go to America to visit Washington, because my cousin is over there. Of course, I want to go to London too, because England is where English language developed. If I can ride my bike in Cambridge University, I will be very happy. I hope I can speak English with everyone in the world. Also I'll introduce China to them, such as the Great Wall, and the gardens in Suzhou. I like the English language. To learn English is wonderful. I once wanted to be an English teacher . I also like Chinese literature. When I was really young, I was able to remember lots of poems. I'm Lai Senhan from the University of International Business & Economics. Do you know what date is it today? Today is the Olympic Date. I'm so glad to stand here today to share my idea about Beijing Olympic Games together with you all. The title of my speech is: what can we do for Beijing Olympic Games?
First of all, let me tell you a story that happened 2 years ago. At the end of August, 2007, when I decided to come to Beijing for study, my friends hel* * **rewell Party for me. They said: after your graduation, you should look for a job in Beijing, and then in 2008, we shall go to visit you during the Olympic Games. I laughed and answered: OK, no problem!
Time flied and 2 years passed. Now I am a graduate. My teachers and classmates always ask me: what's your plan after your graduation? Go back home, stay in Beijing, or go to some other places? And I always answer: I will stay in Beijing. I make this decision not because of my promise to my friends 2 years ago, but because: I've fallen in love with Beijing! I'm eager to welcome the coming Olympic Games together with my fellow countrymen, and I wish I could do something for the Olympics & for the city.
As we know, Beijing will host the 29th Summer Olympic Games in 2008. As a Chinese, I think many people are thinking: what we can do for Beijing Olympic Games. Most of us are not athletes, we cannot take part in competitions directly; we are not officials either, we don't need to do the preparatory work. We are only ordinary people, what we can do!
There are still so many things we can do! For example, for me, I am a graduate majoring Business English. As far as I am concerned, I will keep on learning English hard, and apply for being a volunteer. I will use English to serve the Games together with other volunteers. And also, as a businessman at that time, I will avail myself of the great commercial opportunities that the Olympics brings to us, make more efforts to offer my contribution to the growth of our national economy.
And for all of us, with the goal to host a "Green Olympics", we shall plant more trees, grass & flowers. Don't waste water. In order to alleviate the problems of air pollution & traffic congestions, we shall take buses & subways more. With the goal to host a "People's Olympics", and in order to make our Olympics more attractive and to make our Beijing more beautiful, we shall help everyone we meet who needs help, we shall abide by traffic rules, don't smoke in public and no spitting. The most important way for our Chinese to support our Beijing Olympic Games, in my opinion, is to work hard on our duties.

the mirror and i
我和鏡子
i like to look into the mirror. i remember when i was a little girl, i often stood on my toes, trying to find my face in the mirror of the dressing table, which was nearly as high as i was. now i still like to look into the mirror. only now, the dressing table is too low for me. as i bend down, i see the face of a young woman, glowing with maturity, confident in her future and fascinated with her own reflection.
the fact that i like to look into the mirror has to do with my granny with whom i spent most of my childhood. i remember clearly that one night i heard her murmuring, "women can"t be seen. women can"t be seen." i was so confused as to look into the mirror the next morning to check if i could indeed see myself. only now as a young woman myself, can i understand that it was not physical visibility that granny had on her mind.
granny spent all her life taking care of the family, day in and day out. she cooked for her husband and 10 children. but whenever guests came, she and other female family members had to eat by the stove in the small kitchen. at family discussions, she was never asked for her opinion. after grandpa passed away, she had to listen to my uncle, her eldest son, fulfilled her duty as daughter, wife, and mother; yet as a person, she remained little noticed. even though she could see herself in the mirror of the dressing table, she was never visible in the mirror of society.
i have been living a different life. at home, i make decisions together with the rest of the family. in school, i often take charge of various activities the same as other boys and girls. not only that, i can see something granny could not have dreamed of─making decisions for my own future. my life has been a series of decisions. i could choose from several universities as i came out of high school. at university, i could choose from a range of subjects from english literature to business law. and now upon graduation, i am again faced with decisions─to further my study or to go to work; to stay in china or to go abroad; to get married right away or to remain single for a bit longer.
it does not matter whether or not i will become famous or rich, but i will treasure the chance to demonstrate my potential and to help other women demonstrate theirs as full members of society, fully visible in the mirror of history. i will treasure it because the abundance of choice that i enjoy came only after decades of efforts made by my granny, my mum, and millions of other chinese women.
however, the choices to be made by me and others of my generation are a great challenge. the misconception that men are superior to women is still dominating many people"s minds. while men are encouraged to compete and to assert themselves, we are expected to be quiet, loyal and obedient. this is not very different from what is expected of us as good wives and good mothers. the challenge we face calls for a higher level of our personal development and self-determination.
the story of my grandmother and myself mirrors the lives of millions of other women in china and perhaps in the world. many of them still lead the life of my grandmother. their worth is not yet recognized. it is the responsibility of a young person like me to work hard and struggle hard so that they too will see themselves and will be seen in the mirror of society.
this is my dream. this dream, i believe, is not only shared by our grandmothers, mothers and sisters, but also by many of our fathers, brothers, husbands and male colleagues.
it will not come true until everyone fully realizes that women can contribute to society and should be guaranteed the right to do so. women hold up half the sky.

愛照鏡子的這個癖好始于我和奶奶共同度過的童年時光。我清楚地記得一天夜里，聽見奶奶低聲自語：女人啊，別人怎么就看不見你，怎么就看不見你呢？我對此感到十分困惑，第二天一早就跑到鏡子面前要檢驗一下是否鏡子照得見自己。直到現在長大成人后我才明白，奶奶所看不見的并不是鏡子里的形象。
奶奶為了照顧一大家人，起早貪黑，忙碌操持了一輩子。她每天為丈夫和十個子女生火做飯，每到家里來了客人，她卻只能和家中所有女性成員一起擠在狹小的廚房里的灶前吃飯。家里討論家事，奶奶從沒有過問的權利。爺爺去世之后，她只得聽從新的一家之主──我的大伯，也就是她的長子。經歷了一生的艱辛，奶奶盡到了作為女兒、妻子和母親的全部責任，但作為一個人，她卻很少被別人關注過。盡管她能夠在梳妝臺的鏡子中看到自己的模樣，在家庭和社會中她卻總是一個隱形人。
我過的是與奶奶截然不同的生活。在家里，我與家人一同商定家庭事務。在學校里，我和其他同學一樣經常組織各種活動。不僅如此，我做了奶奶做夢也想不到的`事情：為自己的未來做出選擇。我的生活就是一連串自我抉擇的結果。高中畢業時，我可以從眾多大學中挑選一所。在大學里，我可以從一系列專業中挑選自己最喜愛的專業──從英國文學到商法。現在畢業將至，我又一次面對選擇：或繼續深造，或開始工作；或留在國內，或走出國門；或很快成家，或暫時單身。

Today the topic of my impromtu speech is that home is where the heart is. Home is the harbor of both our body and mind. Home is the never ever changed inner sustenance. Many people may say that where there is home, there is heart, but I want to say that where there is heart, there is home. Concerning this saying, I have three points to back me up.
Regarding the first point, if only we have love, and care for the parents sincerely, then home is just there near us. We still can be together if our hearts are connected. The reason why home is so important to us is that there are our beloved parents waiting for us. No matter how far we are away from home, their solicitude is always there. In the same way, whether we are near at hand or far away at the end of the world. Take an ancient Chinese flood-combatting hero-Da Yu for example. At that time, Da Yu was assigned to combat the flood through water control. He passed his home three times, but never went in for a look. Didn’t he want to go in? I don’t think so. I believe he missed his family so much in his heart, but he knew what the more important thing was. Therefore, he put his home in his heart and regulated waters first. Accordingly, we can see that as long as we have a caring heart, home is not distant from us.
Secondly, where there is love and affection in your heart, there is your home. To illustrate, San Mao, a Taiwanese writer, and her husband, Hexi lived in the Sahara Desert happily. Though they lived in the harsh environment and they didn’t have enough food supplies, they were still contented with what they had got. Neither San Mao nor He Xi was the original resident there, but for love in their hearts, they treated there as their home. This fully explained why San Mao finally left the Sahara after He Xi’s death. If love has gone, then the home will not exist any more.
Bringing my arguments to a close, heart is the harbor of home. Only if we are full of love towards our families, home is always there with us no matter how far it is geographically.

Should parents set limits in internet access for their teenage children? Why?
Internet is dangerous if a child has unlimited freedom to use it. Because teenagers are too weak to resist the great tempt. Various online games will cost their almost all-day time. And many kinds of online movies may teach them unhealthy content such as violence. Also, long-time exposure to computer will do great harm to teenager's eyesight. A child addicted to Internet will neglect his study completely. However, the word limit does not mean forbidding. It can't be denied that internet is a very useful tool for learning. In this information age, computer and internet is essential. Adequate access to internet will contribute to teenagers keeping pace with this world. Also, internet is a fine entertainment for students who have study longtime and get tired. So, I think parents should set limits on but not forbid access for their teenager children.
2.Should smoking be prohibited completely in all countries? Why?
Well, it's a quite complex question. Overall, in my opinion, I think smoking shouldn't be completely prohibited in all countries. Let me explain my views.We all know clearly that smoking is very harmful to the smoker's health. Longtime smoking can lead to lung cancer and other serious health problem. Also, smoking in public situation is awful. People around the smoker, especially the children, also suffer from the damage to their health. In spite of all these bad effects mentioned above, however, I still think smoking is indeed needed in our society. For example, when people get tired or anxious, a cigarette can help to release their body as well as spirit. Also, in some social intercourse, cigarette is a essential. In my eyes, I can't imagine what people's life will become if smoking is completely prohibited. There may be many benefits for individuals, but the social will suffer a lot. So, I think smoking should not be prohibited. It is individual effort to make smoking a useful thing.
