　　i a honored to address you toniht. on behalf of the raduatin asters and dotoral students of washinton university's shool of enineerin and applied siene, i would like to thank all the parents, spouses, failies, and friends who enouraed and supported us as we worked towards our raduate derees. i would espeially like to thank y own faily, eiht ebers of whih are in the audiene today. i would also like to thank all of the departent seretaries and other enineerin shool staff ebers who always seeed to be there when onfused raduate students needed help. and finally i would like to thank the washinton university faulty ebers who served as our instrutors, entors, and friends.

　　as i think bak on the seven-and-a-half years i spent at washinton university, y ind is filled with eories, happy, sad, frustratin, and even huorous.

　　toniht i would like to share with you soe of the eories that i take with e as i leave washinton university.

　　i take with e the eory of y offie on the fourth floor of lopata hall - the roo at the end of the hallway that was too hot in suer, too old in winter, and always too far away fro the woen's restroo. the window was y offie's best feature. were it not for the physis buildin aross the way, it would have afforded e a lear view of the arh. but instead i ot a view of the roof of the physis buildin. i also had a view of one orner of the roof of urbauer hall, whih seeed to be a favorite perh for various speies of birds who alternately won perhin rihts for several weeks at a tie. and i had a nie view of the physis ourtyard, noteworthy as a ood plae for wathin people run their dos. it's aain how fasinatin these views beae the loner i worked on y dissertation. but y favorite view was of a nearby oak tree. fro y fourth-floor vantae point i had a rather intiate view of the tree and the various birds and squirrels that inhabit it. oasionally a bird would land on y window sill, whih usually had the effet of startlin both of us.

　　i take with e the eory of two youn professors who passed away while i was a raduate student. anne johnstone, the only feale professor fro who i took a ourse in the enineerin shool, and bob durr, a politial siene professor and a eber of y dissertation oittee, both lost brave battles with aner. i reeber the fondly.

　　i take with e the eory of failin the first exa in one of the first enineerin ourses i took as an underraduate. i reeber thinkin the ourse was just too hard for e and that i would never be able to pass it. so i went to talk to the professor, ready to drop the lass. and he told e not to ive up, he told e i ould sueed in his lass. for reasons that seeed opletely ludirous at the tie, he said he had faith in e. and after that y rades in the lass slowly iproved, and i ended the seester with an a on the final exa. i reeber how otivational it was to know that soeone believed in e.

　　i take with e eories of the idwestern friendliness that so surprised e when i arrived in st. louis years ao. sine ovin to new jersey, i a sad to say, nobody has asked e where i went to hih shool.

　　i take with e the eory of the short-lived oputer siene raduate student soial oittee lunhes. the idea was that roups of s rad students were supposed to take turns ookin a onthly lunh. but after one rad student prepared a pot of hiken that poisoned alost the entire s rad student population and one unluky faulty eber in one fell swoop, there wasn't uh enthusias for havin ore lunhes.

　　i take with e the eory of a ore suessful raduate student effort, the establishent of the assoiation of raduate enineerin students, known as aes. started by a handful of enineerin raduate students beause we needed a way to elet representatives to a apus-wide raduate student overnent, aes soon rew into an oraniation that now sponsors a wide variety of ativities and has been instruental in addressin a nuber of enineerin raduate student onerns.

　　i take with e the eory of an enineerin and poliy departent that one had flourishin proras for full-tie underraduate, asters, and dotoral students.

　　i take with e eories of the 1992 u.s. presidential debate. eaer to et involved in all the exiteent i volunteered to help wherever needed. i reeber spendin several days in the akeshift debate hq ivin out-of-town reporters diretions to the athleti oplex. i reeber bein thrilled to et assined the job of olletin fil fro the photoraphers in the debate hall durin the debate. and i reeber the disappointent of drawin the shortest straw aon the student volunteers and bein the one who

had to take the fil out of the debate hall and down to the dark roo five inutes into the debate - with no hane to re-enter the debate hall after i left.

　　i take with e eories of university holidays whih never seeed to apply to raduate students. i reeber spendin any a fall break and president's day holiday with y fellow rad students in all day eetins brouht to us by the oputer siene departent.

　　i take with e eories of exas that seeed desined ore to test endurane and perseverane than astery of the subjet atter. i anaed to esape takin any lasses that featured infaous 24-hour-take-hoe exas, but reeber the sufferin of y less fortunate olleaues. and what dotoral student ould foret the pain and sufferin one ust endure to survive the qualifyin exas?

　　i take with e the eory of the seven-inute rule, whih always seeed to be an aeptable exuse for bein ten inutes late for anythin on apus, but whih doesn't see to apply anywhere else i o.

　　i take with e the eory of friday afternoon a happy hours, known not for kes of beer, but rather bowls of rainbow sherbet punh. over the several years that i attended these happy hours they enjoyed varyin derees of popularity, often proportional to the quality and quantity of the aopanyin refreshents - but there was always the rainbow sherbert punh.

　　i take with e eories of purple parkin perits, the west apus shuttle, hekin y pendaflex, over-due library books, tryin to print fro e, lunhes on delar, friends who slept in their offies, iniature olf in lopata hall, the reenway talk, division iii basketball, and tryin to onvine dean russel that yet another enineerin shool rule should be haned.

　　finally, i would like to onlude, not with a eory, but with soe advie. what would a raduation speeh be without a little advie, riht? anyway, this advie oes in the for of a verse delivered to the 1977 raduatin lass of lake forest ollee by theodore seuss eisel, better known to the world as dr. seuss - here's how it oes:
