In a week the money will all be spent, but the picture will still be here. The artist was very pleased and thanked the famer for saying such kind things about his pictures.

我上中學時沒有學過音標，基本上是跟著教師念，對不對不得而知。有時會鬧出笑話，例如dining一room中的第一個i，不發 [i]，而發[ai]，但是教師讀成[i]，我們也就跟著讀錯了，后來才糾正過來。上大學以后改學俄語，大學畢業以后又自學過一些英語， 能閱讀有關的專業書籍。但是從來沒有學過“聽”和“說”，基本上 是“啞巴英語”。
1979年45歲時第一次隨團去法國和德國參觀。當時我能閱 讀自己熟悉的專業書刊，算是代表團中英語水平比較高的。但一到外國，除了一般的問候語以外幾乎都聽不懂，說不了，所以根本聽 不懂技術講解。對于熟悉的專業書面材料，如果是用大寫字母寫成的說明，一時還反應不過來，需要在腦子中翻譯成小寫才看得懂。 代表團團長還不時地鼓勵我“膽子大一些”。其實哪里是什么膽子大小的問題，聽不懂，說不了，看不懂，哪里來的膽子？
在國外期間，我與每一個不會外語的.人一樣，口袋里裝著一個 紙條，上寫“我住在XXX旅館，請把我送回去。”以防一旦走失時使用。我當時是某設計院總工程師，高級工程師，看著這樣的紙條， 心里真有一種說不出的被侮辱感，“我這個中國高級工程師和總工程師只有這樣的水平，與文盲差不多，外國人怎么會看得起我們？” 發憤之心油然而生，回國以后下決心發奮學習，努力提高英語口語能力。
