　　In my heart, I think the most important quality to continue the friendshipis sincerity. A true friendship must be built on sincerity. However, to continuea friendship is not a easy thing. 　　Ladies and Gentlemen I'd planned to speak to you tonight to report on thestate of the union but the events of earlier today have led me to change thoseplans. Today is a day for mourning and remembering. Nancy and I are pained tothe core by the tragedy of the shuttle Challenger. We know we share this painwith all of the people of our country. This is truly a national loss.

　　Nineteen years ago almost to the day we lost three astronauts in a terribleaccident on the ground. But we've never lost an astronaut in flight. We've neverhad a tragedy like this.

　　And perhaps we've forgotten the courage it took for the crew of theshuttle. But they the Challenger Seven were aware of the dangers but overcamethem and did their jobs brilliantly. We mourn seven heroes: Michael Smith DickScobee Judith Resnik Ronald McNair Ellison Onizuka Gregory Jarvis and ChristaMcAuliffe.

　　We mourn their loss as a nation together.

　　For the families of the seven we cannot bear as you do the full impact ofthis tragedy. But we feel the loss and we're thinking about you so very much.Your loved ones were daring and brave and they had that special grace thatspecial spirit that says "Give me a challenge and I'll meet it with joy." Theyhad a hunger to explore the universe and discover its truths. They wished toserve and they did. They served all of us.

　　We've grown used to wonders in this century. It's hard to dazzle us. Butfor twenty-five years the United States space program has been doing just that.We've grown used to the idea of space and perhaps we forget that we've only justbegun. We're still pioneers. They the members of the Challenger crew werepioneers.

　　And I want to say something to the schoolchildren of America who werewatching the live coverage of the shuttle's take-off. I know it's hard tounderstand but sometimes painful things like this happen. It's all part of theprocess of exploration and discovery. It's all part of taking a chance andexpanding man's horizons. The future doesn't belong to the fainthearted; itbelongs to the brave. The Challenger crew was pulling us into the future andwe'll continue to follow them.

　　I'm only going to talk to you just for a minute or so this evening becauseI have some -- some very sad news for all of you -- Could you lower those signsplease? -- I have some very sad news for all of you and I think sad news for allof our fellow citizens and people who love peace all over the world; and that isthat Martin Luther King was shot and was killed tonight in MemphisTennessee.

　　Martin Luther King dedicated his life to love and to justice between fellowhuman beings. He died in the cause of that effort. In this difficult day in thisdifficult time for the United States it's perhaps well to ask what kind of anation we are and what direction we want to move in. For those of you who areblack -- considering the evidence evidently is that there were white people whowere responsible -- you can be filled with bitterness and with hatred and adesire for revenge.

　　We can move in that direction as a country in greater polarization -- blackpeople amongst blacks and white amongst whites filled with hatred toward oneanother. Or we can make an effort as Martin Luther King did to understand and tocomprehend and replace that violence that stain of bloodshed that has spreadacross our land with an effort to understand compassion and love.

　　For those of you who are black and are tempted to fill with -- be filledwith hatred and mistrust of the injustice of such an act against all whitepeople I would only say that I can also feel in my own heart the same kind offeeling. I had a member of my family killed but he was killed by a whiteman.

　　But we have to make an effort in the United States. We have to make aneffort to understand to get beyond or go beyond these rather difficulttimes.
