我國古代民間雖然早已有過年的風俗，但那時并不叫做春節。因為那時所說的春節，指的是二十四節氣中的“立春”。
南北朝則把春節泛指為整個春季。據說，把農歷新年正式定名為春節，是辛亥革命后的事。由于那時要改用陽歷，為了區分農、陽兩節，所以只能將農歷正月初一改名為“春節”。
