5. first / at first

（1）first = first of all. 首先、第一，一般用在說明順序上的首先、第一。

Work must come first.

（2）at the first = at the beginning “最初、開始”一般用來暗示后來情況有所變化。

At first he lived in Tianjing and then moved to Shanghai.

6. discover / look for / find

（1）discover“發現”指偶然發生或察看到早已存在著的或早已為人所知的人或事。

We discovered Miss Wang to be friendly to us.

（2）look for “尋找”強調尋找的動作、不涉及結果，是延續性動詞。

The two boys are looking for the borrowed newspaper everywhere.

（3）find“發現、找到”強調結果，是短暫性動詞。

7. long before / before long

（1）long before “很久以前”作狀語，常與一般過去時，過去完成時連用。

That means dinosaurs lived long before human beings appeared.

（2）before long “不久以后”相當于soon多與將來時連用。

8. be covered with / be covered by

（1）be covered with “由…覆蓋”表示自身自然生長的。

Cats are covered with fur and dogs are covered with hair.

（2）be covered by “被…覆蓋”表示動作，是被動的結構。

The hill is covered by green trees.

The ground, the houses and the trees were all covered by snow.

9. in the future / in future.

（1）in the future “將來”指將來的某一時期，相當于the time yet to come

She wants to go abroad in the future.

He will become a film star in the future.

（2）in future “將來、今后”，主要強調從現在起的以后相當于from now on.

“You must study hard in future, ”the teacher said.

10. because / since / as / for

（1）because 從屬連詞，“因為”，表示直接的理由，由because 引導的從句，一般放在主句的后面。

My mother didn’t go shopping because she wasn’t free.

－Why didn’t you come to school?

－Because I had a high fever.

（2）since說明兩件事之間的邏輯關系，“既然”

Since they haven’t any paper, they can’t make paper ships.

（3）as說明明顯的理由，“由于”，由as引導的從句一般放在主句的前面。

As it is dark, we stopped to have a rest.

（4）for表示原因時語氣最弱，是并列連詞，常用來補充說明理由或提供一種解釋，由for引導的從句一般放在主句的后面。

China welcomed an important visitor this week. He is Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations (UN聯合國). Annan stayed in China for five days. This is his fifth visit.
