T: Yesterday we learned something about the success of the disabled people - Professor Hawking and Beethoven. What have you learnt from these successful disabled people? Who’d like to tell me?

S: I have learnt a lot from them. I think there is nothing difficult in the world if we stick to it. When we meet with difficulty in our life or in our study, we shouldn’t lose heart just like these disabled people. In future, no matter when I meet with any difficulty in my study, I won’t lose heart and I’ll work hard at my lessons. I think my dream of going to university will come true next year in this way.

T: Yeah. Very good. I am sure your dream will come true next year. Today we are going to learn another passage. It will tell us how we should treat people with disabilities. Now let’s do some vocabulary work first.

Vocabulary work (1)

Which word is explained?

1. how you think or feel about something and how this makes you behave - attitude

2. to announce something publicly or officially - declare

3. likely to be true or to happen - probable

4. to supply something to someone - provide

5. something which you do to try to cure an illness or injury, especially something suggested or done by a doctor – treatment

Vocabulary work (2)

Explain the words in simple and easy English.

1. bathroom - a room with a bath, sink (= bowl for washing), and often a toilet

2. clinic - a place where people go for medical treatment or advice

3. enter - to come or go into a place

4. painting - a picture that someone has painted

5. splendid - very good or very beautiful, special, satisfactory

Step 3. Reading

T: OK. Now open your books. Turn to Page 46. Look at the text. There are five important points in this text.

(While the students read the text, the teacher shows the notes on the screen.)

1. People with disabilities are not _____.

2. Disabilities are very _____.

3. Disabilities are not _______.

4. We must _______________ disabled people.

5. We must bring disabled children ________________.

Please read the notes on the screen. They are not complete. Now I give you four minutes to read the passage quickly to complete these notes. And write them on a piece of paper. After a while, I’ll ask one of you to write the answers on the blackboard. Are you clear?

Ss: Yes.

T: Let’s begin.

Suggested answers:

1. stupid

2. common / usual

3. total

4. make life easier for

5. back into normal schools

T: OK. Now you’re given another four minutes to read the passage carefully and then answer some detailed questions.

(Show the questions on the screen.)

1. What wrong attitude do some people have towards people with disabilities?

2. What problems do people have when they get old?

3. What do you have to consider for people with disabilities when we design a building?

4. How many disabled people are there in China today?

5. What has been done for disabled people in China now?

6. What is the meaning of the sentence “Though we are all different, we need never be separate”?

Suggested answers:

1. Some people consider people with disabilities to be stupid.

2. When people get old, they will find it more and more difficult to see, to hear, to walk, to bend down and to climb stairs.

3. When we design a building, we should provide an entrance suitable for wheelchairs on the ground floor, as well as lifts, suitable bathrooms and toilets. We must also make sure that signs are clear and easy to read.

4. In China there are about 50 million people with disabilities today.

5. A new government programme has been designed to help disabled people. More special schools will be built. Disabled people will be helped to find jobs and provided medical treatment.

6. We are all human beings. It is not necessary to separate common people from disabled people.

T: All right. Your comprehension is correct. You should also pay attention to the usages of some phrases and one sentence. Look at them on the screen, please.

Ⅰ.Phrases:

1. have / take a …attitude to / towards …

We should take a correct attitude towards people who make mistakes.

It is not right to have a wrong attitude towards people with disabilities.

2. as a matter of fact = in fact = actually

I didn’t go there yesterday, and as a matter of fact, I didn’t want to go.

As a matter of fact, I finished the work last week.

3. end up with = close with

That speech ended up with a famous poem.

At the dinner we usually begin with soup and end up with fruit.

Ⅱ.Sentence patterns:

1. Some people have the wrong attitude towards people with disabilities, considering them to be stupid.

= Some people have the wrong attitude towards people with disabilities and consider them to be stupid.

1) “Considering them to be stupid” is used as adverbial, expressing concomitant action. e.g.

He lay on the grass, looking at the stars in the sky.

They sat around the table, talking about the plan for the holidays.

2) consider sb./ sth.to be …

= think sb./ sth.to be … e.g.

Don’t consider him to be a true friend.

We consider the work to be very important.

Step 4. Reading aloud and Discussion

T: Now listen to the tape and repeat it in a low voice. Pay attention to stress and intonation. After that, discuss the questions in Part 2 in groups of four. After a while, I’ll ask some group to report your findings to the rest of class.

(Teacher plays the tape for the students to listen to and repeat. Then the Ss begin to discuss. After a while, the teacher says the following.)

T: Which group would like to report your findings to the rest of class? (One student begins to report their group’s findings.)

S: In our daily life, we often meet the people with disabilities. We shouldn’t look down upon them. We should respect them and be friendly to them. What’s more, we should help them. Although life is difficult for the disabled, they don’t lose heart in face of disability. In our city, the government pays great attention to the disabled. They set up a special organization for them. They build special schools and provide medical treatment for them. They also help them to find the job.

T: Very good. Thank you.

Step 5. Language Study

T: Now please look at the sentences on the screen and pay more attention to the word order of these sentences.

(Show the sentences on the screen.)

1. [A] Into the garden came three men.

2. [B] Never have I seen so many people.

3. Not often do you see a lion in your garden.

4. Not only is it cold, but also wet.

5. Not only did he smoke, but he also drank.

T: Watch the sentences carefully and you will find that in group A, the word order of the sentence is “A prepositional phrase + Verb + Subject.” In group B, the word order of a sentence is “A negative word / phrase + Link Verb / Auxiliary Verb +Subject +Full Verb.” (Bb.) That is to say, if a sentence starts with a prepositional phrase, we use a fully inverted sentence. If a sentence begins with a negative word / phrase, we use a partly inverted sentence. Are you clear?

Ss: Yes.

T: OK. Now look at the sentences in Part 3. Think of the usual word order of each sentence. Who will do the first sentence?

S1: A professor sits in a lecture hall of a university in England.

T: Right, the next sentence.

S2: Help will not only be given to people, but also medical treatment will be provided.

Step 6. Practice

T: Very good. Now look at the sentences in Part 4. You will find inversion occurs after adverbial expressions of place (Sentences 1~4) and inversion occurs after “neither nor, not, so”.

Rewrite these sentences using normal word order. Do it orally first. One student one sentence. After class write it down.

Suggested answers:

1. The rain came down.

2. Three women came into the hall.

3. The bell is ringing.

4. The bus is coming

5. I do too.

6. He can’t either.

(Deal with Part 5.)

T: OK. Look at Part 5. Change the sentences using normal word order instead of inversion. Work through them in pairs. Then check the answers with the ones on the screen.

4. Twenty patients were outside the doctor’s clinic.

2. Mr. White asked

3. the tourist replied

4. Sara said with a smile

5. the doctor declared

(Deal with Part 7.)

T: Now look at Part 7. Change the following sentences using normal word order. For example, Number 1: She was able to walk without sticks only after three operations. Number 2: We did not once visit the city on our own. Before changing it, you may first find out the subject in each of the sentences if necessary. Then work through the exercise in pairs. We have also learned some phrases and the grammar - Inversion. After class you should revise what we have learnt today and master them, especially the grammar - Inversion. We should know when we use a fully inverted sentence and when we use a partly inverted sentence. At the same time, you should write the sentences in Part 5 and Part 7 on Page 47 in your exercise books. That’s all for today. Class is over. Bye.

Ss: Bye.
