Useful expressions
1. get down to 著手工作
get down to sth./doing sth. to是介詞：As soon as the reporters know what to write about, they get down to work. 記者們一旦要知道所報道的事件，就著手工作。You failed to pass the exam again. You really must get down to your studies. 你考試又不及格，你可真該認真學習了。 There's not much time left. Let's get down to repairing the machine. 時間所剩不多了，讓我們開始修理這臺機器吧。
2. take a photograph of 拍一張照片
I took a photograph of the Great Hall of the People.我拍了一張人民大會堂的照片。 have one's photo/picture taken 請別人幫自己拍照。如: I wish to have my photograph taken. 我想請人給我照一張相。
3. be popular with 很受…歡迎
Tom Hanks is very popular with many people.湯姆漢克斯受許多人的歡迎。Pop songs are very popular with the young. 流行歌曲受年輕人歡迎。
4. care for 照看；喜歡；想要
She cared for her father all through his long illness. I don't much care for his new clothes. Would you care for a drink?
5. as well 也
as well相當于also, too 的意思，不過 as well的位置一般在句末：I'm going to London and my sister's coming as well. 我要去倫敦，我妹妹也隨我一起去。許多時候 as well和may/might (just) 連用時，構成 may/might (just) as well, 意思是：“不妨；還是...的好”： We may as well begin at once. = We'd better begin at once.
Sentence patterns
1. Checking information is very important. 核實情況非常重要。
句中 checking information 是動名詞短語作主語，課文動名詞短語作主語用的還有：Doing this can save a lot of time and money. 這樣做可以節省許多時間和金錢。 Doing this is more difficult in English than in Chinese. (根據上文，此句的意思為) 用英文寫標題要比用中文寫難。Learning new words and useful expressions is very important for me
2. Finally, there is no more time left for adding new stories. 最后，沒有時間剩下來增加新的報道了。
There is (no)…left for sth./doing sth 是一個較固定的搭配，表示“還留下(沒留下)…來干某事” 。如：There is much money left for food. 還有很多買食物的錢。There is no room left for the piano in the room. 屋里沒有地方放這架鋼琴了。
Language tips
1. --- Zhou Lan, can I have a look at your copy of China Daily? --- Sure, go ahead.
--- 周蘭，我可以看看你這張《中國日報》嗎？--- 當然可以，看吧。
注意go ahead 在對話中的用法: --- Can I borrow your dictionary? --- Yes, go ahead. --- 我可以借用一下你的詞典嗎？ --- 可以，拿去吧。
2. I want to have a look at what's on this weekend. 我想看看這周末上演什么。
句中 What's on 是個名詞性從句,作 look at 的介詞賓語，屬賓語從句。其中 on 是副詞，在句中作表語，意思是“上演、演出”。如：Is there anything good on at Dahua Cinema tomorrow?
大華影院有什么好節目上演嗎？
3. They're said to be very good. 據說他們很棒。
我們已學過It is said that …（據說），本句中 They're said…是一個類似的結構, 也是據說…，所不同的是前者It是形式主語，指代后面的that從句，而后者，是把所議論的人稱代詞直接做了主語: You are said to have got a few tickets for football match, right? 據說你弄到了幾張球票，是嗎？= It is said that you have got a few tickets for football match. He is said to be very good at English. 據說他的英語很好。
4. Reporters are then sent to cover the events. 然后記者被派出去采訪報道這些事件。
cover 在新聞傳媒界有特定的含義，（指新聞記者）采訪、報道。如：I'm here to cover the conference. 我來這里采訪會議情況。Jack was sent to cover the Olympic Games a few days ago.
幾天前杰克被派去采訪奧運會情況了。
5. They telephone people and fix a time for a face-to-face interview with them. 他們給有關的人打電話，約定面對面采訪的時間。
作定語用face-to-face如：We had a face-to-face argument. 我們進行了面對面的爭論。
作狀語用face to face如：The two buildings stand face to face across the street.這兩座建筑物面對面臨街而立。 類似的表達還有：heart to heart (心貼心地)；shoulder to shoulder (肩并肩地)；
hand in hand （手拉手地）；arm in arm (臂挽臂地)
fix a time for sth 約定時間做某事，如：Let's fix a time for the meeting. 讓我們定個時間開會吧。fix 在本句中意思是“安排”，如：Have you got anything fixed for the weekend? 周末你有安排了嗎？
6. They go to the newspaper's own library to look up any information that they need.
look up 指“查詢”。“查字典”的表達應為look up the word in the dictionary如查火車的運行時刻 Look up the times of the trains
7. All the people who work on a newspaper must be able to work fast. 所有從事報業工作的人員都必須能夠快速地進行工作。
work on 意思是“從事...致力于...”的意思。如：Mr. Green is working on a new novel. 格林先生目前正在寫一部新小說。He worked hard on collecting money for the hungry people. 他為饑民們積極從事募捐籌款的工作。
8. They must find out the new information as quickly as possible. 他們必須盡快地查明情況。
短語find out 和find不同，著重于研究、分析后的發現，這樣的過程通常是頗費周折的，所以 find out 比find更費心機，翻譯成中文是“了解，打聽，弄清楚，打探”。如：We should find out how much the house would cost.我們一定要弄清楚真正的房價。We must find out the truth of the matter. 我們必須弄清楚事實真象。
9. Photographers return and the photos are quickly developed. 攝影記者回來了，他們很快地把照片沖洗好。
develop 是“洗照片”的意思，如：I'm going to have our holiday photos developed today. 今天我將把咱們度假的照片沖出來。Sorry, your photos haven't been developed yet. 對不起，你們的照片還沒有沖洗出來。
10. Other editors read the stories which the reporters have written and make any necessary changes. 其他的編輯審閱記者寫好的報道，并作必要的修改。
make changes 意思是“作修改/變動”：The teacher made some changes in his composition.老師在他的作文中作了一些修改。
11. People want to buy the latest newspaper; nobody wants to buy yesterday's.
the latest 是一個十分常見的短語，它的意思是“最近的，最新的”，如：the latest news；最新消息；the latest model 最新型號。late 還可以表示“上一屆，前一任”,如：the late government 上一屆政府。lately 副詞，意思是“近來”相當于recently。如：I've not been feeling very well lately.
我最近身體欠佳。
12. There are reports on new plays, movies, books, new restaurants and so on.
report名詞，“有關…的報道”后用介詞 on，也可以用 about或of, 如：There are many reports on the earthquake from Taiwan.有許多關于臺灣地震的報道。report 作動詞，表示“報道…方面的有關內容”，也總是與介詞 on 連用。例如：He reported on the results of the conference. 他報道了大會的結果。
13. Every Saturday there is a section about things to do at the weekend and the TV programmes in the coming week. 每周六（它）還有一個欄目，介紹周末活動和下周的電視節目。
和weekend 連用的介詞，根據不同的需要有 at, for,over 等。如：at weekend 在周末；go for a weekend 去度周末；stay with sb. over a weekend＝spend a weekend with sb. 與某人一起度周末 in the coming week 在即將到來的星期里。the coming Sunday/year/summer vacation 指“緊接著到來的...”，等于 next Sunday/ year/ summer vacation。
14. Besides, I enjoy learning about new things from politics to sports and music. 除此之外，我還喜歡了解從政治到體育和音樂方面的各種新事物。
這里besides是副詞, “除此之外”: I don't want to go to the cinema; besides, I'm feeling too tired. | My wife and I will be there and four of our friends besides. 下句中besides是介詞: No one writes to me besides you.

①daily: n. The People’s Daily is China’s national daily. adj. He gets a daily wage. adv. Most newspapers appear daily.
②check: check a machine; check to see if everyone is here; --- Are all the windows shut? ---I'll just go and check.
③add: Do you want to add your name to the list? Add 6 and 6 to make 12.
④speed: n. The car is going at full speed. v. The weeks sped by and soon it was time to go back to school.
⑤suitable: We are hoping to find a suitable hotel. The house is not really suitable for a large family.
